You And What Army?

Solo Exhibition at The Hermitage Los Angeles, May-June 2021

My work is often about connections. Investigations into the ways in which things work or don’t work mechanically, and in relationships. I source user manual illustrations as they emerge from the daily processes of trying to survive in a metropolis (ie: car engine, mousetrap, pocket knife, bike-mounted pepper spray, condom box). It’s not always clear what’s functional, in a society where supposed solutions are unsustainable, unethical, or prone to backfire. This body of work is about protection, defenses, barriers. Fantasies and illusions of self-defense. Desires for security and consequences in an unbalanced world.

The Hermitage is an artist-run project space, hosted in a remodeled child’s playhouse in a backyard in Eagle Rock. The Hermitage was created by Paloma Dooley and Jacob Lenc, with help from Billy Frolov and Tyler Morrison.
